Programs

Foundation Programs

  • The Annual Achievement and Scholarship Awards program for Fairfax County and Loudoun County students. Students in grades 7 through 12 from participating schools who achieved a grade point average exceeding 3.0 received Outstanding Student Awards to encourage them to continue their efforts to achieve excellence.

  • The foundation awards college scholarships to selected graduating seniors who exemplify the spirit and goals of the foundation.

  • JGH collaborates with the local chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers Junior (NSBE Jr.) chartered by Excellent Options (XO), Inc., a 501 c(3) organization. Excellent Options was created to ensure that African-American students graduate from high school on time, with excellence, and with options.

  • JGH’s support of NSBE Jr. will help advance student success in STEM-related concepts like coding, circuit design, basic electronics, applied math, mechanical engineering, applied technology, and management and supervision. JGH and the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. provide financial and mentoring support, information on career opportunities, and lead education sessions on STEM-related topics, including coding, engineering, and mathematics.

  • JGH provides financial support for the NSBE Jr. Chapter VEX Robotics middle school team. The students participate in the VEX Robotics competition, an annual event where competing university student teams design and build robots to compete in regional competitions sponsored by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation. The competition allows students to have fun working in teams while making technically challenging robots. The students on the team will gain valuable academic and life skills such as teamwork, leadership, technical design skills, and written and oral communication are all necessary for the club’s success.

  • The foundation partners with organizations working in the community to develop our youth. Consideration for financial support is given to organizations that focus on developing African-American males to prepare for success in high school and beyond.

  • The Joyce Gillespie Harrington Educational and Charitable Foundation provides nutritious meals to families during Thanksgiving and Christmas toys to hundreds of underprivileged children through our Toys-4-Kids Christmas program.

  • The foundation awards sponsorship for students to participate in the Leadership Development Institute (LDI), which focuses on developing future leaders. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc operates this program.

In 2020, JGH began its collaboration with the local chapter of National Society of Black Engineers Junior (NSBE Jr.) chartered by Excellent Options (XO), Inc., a 501(c) organization that sponsors its parent-led, Loudoun County Public Schools partnered, Excellent Options Clubs. Excellent Options was created to ensure that African American students graduate from high school, on-time, in excellence and with options.

JGH’s support of NSBE Jr. will help advance student success in STEM related concepts like coding, circuit design, basic electronics, applied math, basic mechanical engineering, applied technology, and management and supervision. JGH and its member, the Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will provide both financial and mentoring support, information on career opportunities, and lead education sessions on STEM related topics including coding, engineering, and mathematics.

The partnership between JGH and NSBE Jr. confirms our shared desire is to see the academic achievement/opportunity gap eliminated for minority students and to equip these students to successfully pursue any academic, professional, or technological option that they desire.

The foundation donates funds to other organizations working in the community to develop our youth. Consideration for financial support is given to organizations with programs focusing on the development of elementary age youth in preparation for success in high school and beyond.

The Joyce Gillespie Harris Educational and Charitable Foundation also gives back to the community by supporting two annual initiatives during the holiday season. We assist in providing nutritious meals to families in Reston and Virginia during the Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas toys to hundreds of underprivileged children in the Reston, Virginia area through our Toys-4-Kids Christmas program.

Lastly, the foundation provides sponsorship for students to participate in the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) which focuses on developing future leaders. This program is operated by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
